In June 1955, in the stage of was disbanded due to a Las Vegas show for the last months of 1955. At the end of the show in November 1955, a new, smaller ensemble, , doing recording sessions for Capitol, was the nucleus for a new big band. This band was later called . For the first recordings in 1956, Capitol called this band 'The Swinging Herd', which was later determined to be 'The Fourth Herd'. The name 'The Swinging Herd' was later used for the 1960's successor .
The early 'Swinging Herd'-stage ended with the recordings on May16th, 1956 in Chicago.
