RPM was launched in 1967 by clarinetist [url=http://www.discogs.com/artist/Dan+Hill+%282%29]Dan Hill[/url] and ex-[url=http://www.discogs.com/label/Gramophone+Record+Co.+%28Pty.%29+Ltd.]GRC[/url] sales manager Matt Mann. It became a large and independant label in its own right before its parent company was merged with the Gallo Record Company in 1996.

RPM is now the division handling Gallo's domestic roster (mostly local artists and compilations), with releases sharing the same catalogue numbering scheme as the RPM Dance imprint.
