The RPM Record Company (Pty) Ltd. was founded in 1967 by clarinettist [url=http://www.discogs.com/artist/Dan+Hill+%282%29]Dan Hill[/url] and ex-[url=http://www.discogs.com/label/Gramophone+Record+Co.+%28Pty.%29+Ltd.]GRC[/url] sales manager Matt Mann, with the original offices situated in Electro House (corner of Goud and Fox Streets), downtown Johannesburg. Sometimes written as "RPM Record Co. (Pty) Ltd." / "RPM Record Co." / "RPM (Pty.) Ltd." / "R.P.M. Record Company" or any permutation thereof, it was the local distributor for labels such as [l=Ariola], [l=Arista], [l=Geffen Records], [l=Virgin], , , , [l=Motown] as well as its own [l=RPM] and imprints.

In 1996 it merged with the [l=Gallo Record Company] and became the division handling Gallo's domestic roster.
