GTO Records label was formed in 1974 by Laurence Myers, with a roster of artists including The Dooleys, Donna Summer and Heatwave. Myers' music production company, the Gem Toby Organization, provided the "GTO" acronym and Myers had also had previous success with his GTO Films company, sharing an involvement with the film 'Fatal Attraction'.

The GTO Records label was sold to CBS Records in 1977 and ceased to appear after 1981 when its artists moved onto another CBS label, Epic Records. The GTO back catalog was subsequently acquired by Sony Music, that is now Sony BMG Music Entertainment.
