Spar Records was founded in 1961 by record men Alan Bubis and William Beasley. They had been partners in the Tennessee and Republic labels in the 1950s and had eventually gotten into record distribution as well.

The Spar imprint was soon followed by budget labels Giant Records, Kenilworth, Caravelle, Tunes For Tots and Country & Western Hits. These releases used the finest of Nashville's singers, songwriters and musicians. Bobby Russell, Buzz Cason, Herbert Hunter, Freddie North, Thomas Henry, The Avons, Peggy Gaines, Boots Randolph, Bill Justis, Mac Gayden, Jimmy Buffett, Wayne Moss, Charlie McCoy, Pete Drake, Earl Gaines, and many other legendary musicians appear on the Spar releases. By the late 1960s Spar had gotten into the LP market with its Sterling, Spar Premiere, Plantation House, Nashville Sound and eventually the Spar 8 track tape line of releases. By the late 1960s they had launched Top Pop Hits label, but it was short lived. The Spar label went out of business in the mid 1970s.
