DreamWorks Records
An eclectic pop-oriented label that was founded in 1996 as a part of the budding DreamWorks SKG empire. Initially distributed by Geffen/MCA, the label founded by the "G" of SKG, David Geffen, it switched to Interscope/Universal during the merger of the [l=MCA] and [l=PolyGram] families of labels that formed the [l=Universal Music Group]. The label was run by industry legends [a=Lenny Waronker] and [a=Mo Ostin], who brought their artist-friendly philosophy to the label after they were forced out of [l=Warner Bros. Records] during WEA's great management shift of the 1990s.
DreamWorks SKG never lived up to its potential: the label was sold to Universal in 2005, and the movie studio was sold to Paramount Pictures/Viacom the same year. The label was shut down and absorbed by Geffen/Interscope/Universal shortly afterward, and the studio became a small subdivision of Paramount.
The DreamWorks Records logo was the last completed project of the artist Roy Lichtenstein.
