The label was named for the deceased son of Bratton and her then husband (and boxer) Johnny Bratton. Their son Derek was known to the family as Ricky, Ric, or Ric-Tic, and had died in 1962 at the age of 11.

Ric-Tic and partner label Golden World featured many soul music artists and was a competitor for fellow Detroit label Motown. In 1968 Motown's owner, Berry Gordy paid $1 million for the label, in a deal that included many of the label's artists.
