Shelley Products

Defunct independent American pressing plant that was located at Huntington Station, Long Island, New York, active from 1947 through 1985.

The plant was founded in 1947 by [a=Clark Galehouse] and department store owner Michael Friedman, and named after Galehouse's daughter (Shelley Galehouse Broven). Initially located in a garage in Roslyn, New York, before moving to Huntington Station in 1951. Besides pressing for a host of labels small, medium and large (including [l=Columbia] and [l=RCA Victor]), the company also owned two labels, [l=Golden Crest] and [l=Shelley]. Galehouse passed away in 1983 and the plant shut down in 1985.

Pressing identifiers include:
• Suffix in label matrix: LY (Atlantic releases)

• Runout: raised "X" in Side A runout (styrene pressings)
• Runout stamp: (Ƨ) (backwards S in a circle)
• Runout stamp: Ƨ (backwards S)
• Runout etch: "Lazy S" (sideways)
• Runout etch: "SHELLEY"
• Mirrored numbers etched in runouts

Identified by label matrix suffix/code "LY" on [l=Atlantic] and subsidiaries' LPs and 45s starting in 1967 and continuing through 1979 or 1980 (e.g., [r7094770]). LP releases on [l=London Records] and its various sublabels ([l=Parrot], etc.) as pressed by that plant, bore an "SH" label matrix suffix (e.g., [r6785657]). Also identifiable by "54" numerical code on 1979-84 pressings for [l=PolyGram] sublabels (e.g., [r6094486]), or by a backward stamped "(Ƨ)" in a circle in runouts (e.g., [r1528989]). Around 1979, the "Ƨ" stamp was no longer in a circle (e.g., [r6821621]). On a few occasions, the full name "SHELLEY" is etched in the deadwax (e.g., [r12560083]).

Shelley pressed both vinyl and styrene LPs.
• Vinyl pressings had a 70mm / 2.75" diameter pressing ring.
• Styrene pressings had a 19mm / 0.75" diameter pressing ring.
• 98mm diameter label stock

Known to have pressed for [l=Elektra], [l=RSO], [l=Avco Records] and many others. All releases pressed by Shelley for [l=Liberty]'s [l=Sunset Records] budget label were pressed in styrene.
