Shanachie Records was founded in 1972 by [a=Richard Nevins] and . According to (Secret Museum of Music), it is one of the largest independent record labels in the world, and is currently distributed by [l=E1 Music]. Starting as speciality fiddle music label they released work by Celtic groups such as [a=Planxty], [a=Clannad] and [a=The Chieftains]. Other genres on the label include Latin American, African music, soul, country, reggae and ska. In 1989 they acquired Yazoo Records from [a=Nick Perls]. This allowed them to release vintage jazz and blues recordings.

The label name is from the Irish word [i]seanchaí[/i], a storyteller.
The early label design was made by in 1975.

The Grammy-award winning [a=Soweto Gospel Choir] releases albums on Shanachie Records.
