The company and the subsidiary label [l=VOX (6)] were launched by in New York City in 1945 to market recordings of European performers and conductors in the US. Vox's licensing deal with the French Polydor label introduced French singers like Edith Piaf and Jacqueline François to a North American audience. The company was also one of the first to produce not only 78 rpm records, but, starting in 1949, also 33 1/3 rpm LPs.

Mr. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, a fourth-generation descendant of the composer Felix Mendelssohn, sold the company in May 1978 to Ira Moss, owner of [l=The Moss Music Group, Inc.].
