The Village Vanguard is a jazz club located at 178 7th Avenue South in Greenwich Village, New York City. The club was opened at this location on February 22, 1935, by [A=Max Gordon] (1903-1989) who ran the club for the rest of his life. Originally the bookings embraced poetry readings, comedy and folk music, only becoming known as a jazz club in 1957. Later run by his widow, (1922-2018), and subsequently their daughter Deborah Gordon.
