Champion
1950s label based in Nashville, Tennessee, devoted to R&B and Rock'n Roll.
Founded in 1955 by [a=Alan Bubis] and his cousin Reynold Bubis as successor to their "[l=Republic (3)]" label. Initially the label was called "[l=Calvert]", renamed "[l=Champion (2)]" the following year. [a=Ted Jarrett] had joined as head of A&R and primary songwriter. Most issues released on Champion Records used to be recorded with the labels house band [a=Jimmy Beck & His Orchestra] backing the featured artist. When Ted Jarrett moved on to Chicago based [l=Vee Jay Records] in 1959 Alan Bubis closed the label.
A collection of almost all releases by Calvert/Champion are available as 3cd set by german SPV [l=Blue Label (3)]. See release: [r=12891233].
