[b]St. Petersburg Conservatory[/b] named after [a=Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov] - higher musical educational institution in St. Petersburg, the first conservatory in Russia. It was founded by the Highest Decree of October 17 (29), 1861 as a school on the basis of the Musical Classes of the Russian Musical Society, opened two years earlier, on the initiative of pianist, composer and conductor [a=Anton Rubinstein]. In accordance with § 1 of the charter, the music school was established under the direct patronage of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna. Later the school was renamed into a conservatory. The official opening took place on September 8 (20), 1862.
