Herman Lubinsky

American record company and radio station owner
Born August 30, 1896, Bradford, Connecticut
Died March 16, 1974, Newark, N.J.

He established Newark's first radio station (WNJ) in the early 1920s. Prior to this, he was a wireless officer on the merchant ship, USS Carpethia, which sent distress messages while the Titanic was sinking. Later on, the survival list was sent to shore from that ship. He is remembered as the founder of Savoy Records in 1939. His company discovered and produced artists that would define the sound of R&B and jazz for their generation. He operated the label up until a few months before his death. He was interred at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ.
