American playwright, born June 6, 1890; died November 19, 1961. Wife of author DuBose Heyward.

Known for adapting her husband's novel "Porgy" for the stage, which became later the basis of the opera and musical "Porgy and Bess" (music by George Gershwin, libretto by DuBose Heyward, lyrics by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward).
