Ambrose Adekoya Campbell

Nigerian singer, guitarist, percussionist, composer and bandleader.
Born 19 August 1919 in Lagos, Nigeria
Died 22 June 2006 in Plymouth, Devon, England
Campbell settled in Britain at the beginning of the second world war.
His band, the West African Rhythm Brothers, recorded 78rpm 10-inch singles for in the the early-to-mid 1950s and gained a long term residency at the Abalabi Club in Berwick Street in 1952; later he was based at the Club Afrique in Wardour Street, both in Soho.
In 1972, Campbell moved to Los Angeles, where he had been invited to work with Leon Russell. He was on the sessions for Russell's collaboration with Willie Nelson, One For The Road (Columbia, 1989).
He returned to Britain a few years before his death and settled in Plymouth on the south coast. is his son.
