Jamaican reggae and ska group formed in 1963 as a vocal band, The Wailin' Wailers, by , [a=Peter Tosh], , , Ermine 'Cherry Smith' Bramwell and .
The Wailers became the name of the backing band of Bob Marley (in [a=Bob Marley & The Wailers]) when Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left the group in 1974 (even if some [a=Lee Perry] productions like [m=79398] or [m=192201] from 1970 and 1971 used the [a=Bob Marley & The Wailers] credit yet) but were still credited as [a=The Wailers] on [a=Bob Marley & The Wailers] albums (in credits).
After Bob Marley's death in 1981, the group played with artist like [a=Alpha Blondy], , or . Some of the members later released their own records and toured using the name (that first appeared in 1989 on the [m=219616] album).
