Joseph McCarthy, Jr. was educated at Julliard. He charted three times as a songwriter in the U.S. between 1948-1956. "Rambling Rose" by Perry Como hit #18 in 1948 and hit #27 by Gordon MacRae that same year (song co-written by Joe Burke). In 1957, "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life" by Nat King Cole hit #57 (co-written by Cy Coleman). Another song he is known for is "Why Try To Change Me Now" (Frank Sinatra, 1952).
McCarthy also wrote songs for Broadway revues such as John Murray Anderson's Almanac (1953).
