American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, arranger and singer
Born December 14, 1910 in Dallas, Texas, died October 20, 1984 of a heart attack in Kansas City, Missouri

Brother of jazz trombonist Keg Johnson, father of doo wop singer Bud Johnson, and grandfather of Hip-Hop artist Prodigy. During the 1930's he was the director of the Earl Hines orchestra. In the 1940's he wrote arrangements for the big bands of Billy Eckstine, Boyd Raeburn, Woody Herman and others. He was also involved with the early bebop movement.
