Sounds Of Soweto
SOUNDS OF SOWETO – a group of South African artists in exile – originally belonged to a theatre troupe supported by the South African government, which now operates worldwide under the name ‘Ipi Tompi’ as a multi-million dollar enterprise, is under white management and depicts life in the apartheid country primarily as a colourful, exotic spectacle.
SOUNDS OF SOWETO refused to provide global propaganda support to racists and developed an alternative artistic concept. It builds on the great South African tradition of song, dance and performance, blending traditional folk culture with elements of modern urban culture.
