In 1953 he graduated from the Glinka Choir School at the , in 1958 from the Leningrad Conservatory.
In 1968-1969 he trained at the Vienna Academy of Music and Performing Arts with (conducting), in 1970-1971 - at the [a=Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra] with .
Since 1960 - in the Symphony Orchestra of the Karelian Radio and Television (now the Symphony Orchestra of the Karelian State Philharmonic), in 1962-1971 - its chief conductor. Since 1971 he has been a conductor at the Leningrad Maly Opera and Ballet Theater = (now the Mikhailovsky Theatre).
From 1977 to 2018 - Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the .
Since 2018 - Laureate Conductor of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.
From 1990-1998 he led the Stavanger City Symphony Orchestra in Norway.
